The history of Slap Frost and the origins of the tour named in honor of him.
The Story...
Jack Frost—Slaps’ Great Grandfather was a square—always with the snowflakes and kiddy magic. However, the Frost family is no stranger to rhymes, so it wasn’t a huge shock when Slap became obsessed with Hip Hop and decided to put his frigid fingerprints on the industry.
Slap began by blowing the lyrics of “Christmas Rappin” into Kurtis Blow’s ear during a winter storm in New York City in the year 1979. Some said they could hear the bass line coming from various snowplows for days afterwards.
A witness claimed that by using his icy breath, he scribbled rhymes on the outside of Run’s frozen window, drawing out the words for “Christmas in Hollis" and was rewarded with some of DMC’s chicken and collared greens.
Slap continued inspiring hip-hop culture, infusing it with winter flavor. Words like chill, cool and ice became more and more popular—with rappers like Ice-T & LL Cool J donning names to honor the winter imp. Slap used his winter magic to influence artists around the world. Artists even began flaunting expensive jewelry because of its resemblance to ice—all of this because of Slap Frost.
But the industry executives weren’t having that. They couldn’t have a winter sprite controlling the game, so they shut down Slap. The industry started making tracks “hot” and began hosting “Summer Jams”. The temperature around the game got so hot that it was enough to drive a young Slap to the underground, where things always stay a little chiller.
Years passed and there was not one peep out of Slap Frost, not one frozen breath.
But then, two Bay Area rappers and a veteran DJ invoked his name- SLAP FROST, SLAP, SLAP FROST! Some say that this trio is still bringing the legacy of Slap Frost, a savvy, hip hop loving elf, to venues throughout the country.
